Georgia Tech Track and Field needs your help! Track and Field is asking for volunteers to help during events to be held at Georgia Tech.

No prior experience required.

Some of the assignments include:

• Regulate traffic flow on to and off of the field of play

• Post results
• Record results
• Hurdle set-up
• Placement of starting blocks
• Retrieve throwing implements at Shot Put, Discus, Javelin and Hammer
• Replace crossbars at High Jump and Pole Vault
• Assist competition officials in measurement of Long /Triple Jumps and Throwing events

How did three Tech professors, none of whom is taller than 5 feet 8 inches, end up on ESPN.com’s college basketball webpage on the day the NCAA Tournament started? Beginning with its prediction that Georgia Tech would advance to the 2004 Final Four, the Logistic Regression Markov Chain (LRMC) method for forecasting the NCAA Tournament has outperformed over 100 competitors. Come hear the LRMC story: how it works, which pieces of conventional wisdom it disproves and how these Tech professors made it from the blackboards of campus to CNN, ESPN, and The New York Times.

Join us on the evening of Monday, March 12, as we host an evening with Georgia Tech professor Joel Sokol. Professor Sokol has been kind enough to join us the Monday evening after the brackets are released, but before games begin. Optimal time to fill in your bracket. Be the smartest guy or gal in your office basketball pool!

From Professor Sokol’s LRMC website: What is LRMC?

LRMC is a college basketball ranking system designed to use only basic scoreboard data: which two teams played, whose court they played on, and what the margin of victory was.

LRMC stands for “Logistic Regression/Markov Chain”, the two primary mathematical techniques that were a part of our system. We’ve subsequently added a Bayesian component as well.

The North Metro Georgia Tech Club is once again supporting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and the Spring Baseball Classic by selling tickets and soliciting donations. Please do all you can to support both Georgia Tech Baseball and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

The Yellow Jackets enter the season ranked pre-season #9 by Collegiate Baseball. Georgia Tech returns 23 players from a 42-21 2011 team. Junior RHP Buck Farmer and sophomore CF Kyle Wren are both Pre-Season All-American players.

The Bulldogs are ranked #18 by Collegiate Baseball. Georgia returns 22 players from the team that went 33-32 in 2011.

Georgia won last year’s meeting 6-4. This year’s game will be the 10th anniversary game.

The end of the year is almost here! Since December is the month of giving, please don’t forget to make a donation to Roll Call.

Your donation helps Georgia Tech in many ways. Unrestricted donations give the Institute the most flexibility to make sure that the money goes where it is needed the most. Alumni giving levels also play a factor in many of the college rankings, so by giving, you are increasing the prestige of the school.

You can send a check or you can pay online with a credit card (and hey, with the credit card, you can use the donation on this year’s taxes, but not pay until next year!)
